Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 4 April (Morning Shift)

Given below are the pairs of group 13 elements showing their relation in terms of atomic radius. (B < Al), (Al < Ga), (Ga < In) and (In < Tl). Identify the elements present in the incorrect pair and in that pair find out the element (X) that has higher ionic radius (M3+) than the other one. The atomic number of the element (X) is

  1. 49
  2. 81
  3. 31
  4. 13

Answer

(3) 31

Solution

Atomic radii (NCERT, pm): B 85, Al 143, Ga 135, In 167, Tl 170

Ga has ten 3d electrons that shield the nucleus poorly, its atomic radius is less than that of Al.

The pair (Al < Ga) is incorrect.

Ionic radii ( M3+, pm): Al3+ 53.5, Ga3+ 62

X = Ga, atomic number 31

Answer: (3)
