Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 4 April (Evening Shift)

Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Answer

(1) Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect

Solution

Statement I: Across a period, nuclear charge increases and size decreases, so group 14 elements have higher first ionisation enthalpy than group 13 elements ( kJ mol-1):

B 801 < C 1086; Al 577 < Si 786; Ga 579 < Ge 762; In 558 < Sn 708; Tl 589 < Pb 715

Statement I is correct.

Statement II: Group 14 elements (C, Si, Ge) form giant covalent structures, so their melting points are much higher (K):

B 2453 < C 4373; Al 933 < Si 1693; Ga 303 < Ge 1218; In 430 < Sn 505; Tl 576 < Pb 600

Melting and boiling points of group 13 elements are lower, not higher. Statement II is incorrect.
