What is common between vegetative reproduction and apomixis?

  1. Both are applicable to only dicot plants
  2. Both bypass the flowering phase
  3. Both occur round the year
  4. Both produce progeny identical to the parent.

Answer

(4) Both produce progeny identical to the parent.

Solution

As per NCERT, apomixis is the production of seeds without fertilisation; it is a form of asexual reproduction that mimics sexual reproduction.

∵ No meiosis and no fusion of gametes take place in either vegetative reproduction or apomixis,

∴ the offspring of both are genetically identical to the parent (clones).

Apomixis forms seeds, so it does not bypass the flowering phase; both occur in monocots as well as dicots (e.g. grasses show apomixis) and neither is restricted to a particular season.
