Ques. 1AIPMT 2007

Which one of the following on treatment with 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide yields the corresponding alcohol and acid?

  1. C6H5CHO
  2. CH3CH2CH2CHO
  3. CH3- O \|C-CH3
  4. C6H5CH2CHO

Answer

(1) C6H5CHO

Solution

As per NCERT, aldehydes which do not have an α-hydrogen atom undergo self oxidation and reduction (disproportionation) on heating with concentrated alkali – Cannizzaro reaction.

C6H5CHO has no α-hydrogen:

2C6H5CHO + conc. NaOH C6H5CH2OH + C6H5COONa

⇒ CH3CH2CH2CHO and C6H5CH2CHO have α-hydrogens (they undergo aldol condensation); acetone is a ketone.

∴ Benzaldehyde gives the alcohol and the acid (as its salt).
