[figure] Product 'P' in the above reaction is

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. [figure]

Answer

(2) [figure]

Solution

As per NCERT, nitriles react with Grignard reagents to give an imine salt, which on hydrolysis gives a ketone.

Ar-C N + CH3MgBr Ar- NMgBr \|C-CH3

Ar- NMgBr \|C-CH3 H3O+ Ar- O \|C-CH3

(Ar = 3-methoxyphenyl; the -OCH3 group is not affected.)

∴ P is 1-(3-methoxyphenyl)ethan-1-one, the structure in option (2).
