Ques. 1AIPMT 2006

Both sickle cell anemia and Huntington's chorea are-

  1. Congenital disorders
  2. Bacteria-related diseases
  3. Virus-related diseases
  4. Pollutant-induced disorders

Answer

(1) Congenital disorders

Solution

∵ Sickle-cell anaemia is an autosomal recessive Mendelian disorder caused by a point mutation (GAG → GUG) in the β-globin gene.

∵ Huntington's chorea is an autosomal dominant Mendelian disorder.

⇒ Both are inherited through genes from the parents and are present from birth (genetic, i.e. congenital); neither is caused by bacteria, viruses or pollutants.

∴ Both are congenital disorders.
