G-6-P dehydrogenase deficiency is associated with haemolysis of -
- RBCs
- Lymphocytes
- Platelets
- Leucocytes
Answer
(1) RBCs
Solution
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency is an X-linked recessive inborn error of metabolism.
G-6-PD produces NADPH in red blood cells, and NADPH keeps glutathione reduced and protects the RBC membrane from oxidative damage. In its absence (e.g., after eating fava beans or taking certain drugs), the RBCs rupture.
∴ The deficiency causes haemolysis of RBCs (haemolytic anaemia).
