Ques. 1AIPMT 2004

One of the parents of a cross has a mutation in its mitochondria. In that cross, that parent is taken as a male. During segregation of F2 progenies that mutation is found in -

  1. 50% of the progenies
  2. 1/3 of the progenies
  3. None of the progenies
  4. All the progenies

Answer

(3) None of the progenies

Solution

Mitochondria (with their own DNA) are present in the cytoplasm of the cell.

⇒ The zygote receives almost all of its cytoplasm, and hence its mitochondria, from the egg (female parent); the sperm contributes practically only its nucleus.

∴ Mitochondrial genes show maternal (cytoplasmic) inheritance and do not segregate in Mendelian ratios.

∵ The parent carrying the mitochondrial mutation is used as the male, the mutation is not passed to the F1, and therefore it does not appear in any F2 progeny.
