Ques. 1AIPMT 2006

If a colour blind woman marries a normal visioned man, their sons will be

  1. All normal visioned
  2. Three-fourths colourblind and one-fourth normal
  3. One-half colourblind and one-half normal
  4. All colourblind

Answer

(4) All colourblind

Solution

As per NCERT, colour blindness is a sex-linked recessive disorder due to a defect in a gene on the X chromosome.

The colour blind woman is XcXc and the normal man is XY, so the cross is

XcXc XY XcX (daughters, carriers with normal vision) + XcY (sons)

Sons receive their only X chromosome from the mother, and this X carries the defective gene, so every son is affected.

∴ All sons will be colour blind.
