Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 28 January (Morning Shift)

Consider the following reactions giving major product. Identify the correct reaction.

  1. [figure]
  2. [figure]
  3. [figure]
  4. H3CCH2- O \|C-NH2 + Br2 + 4 KOH (alc) H3CCH2NH2 + 2KBr + K2CO3 + 2H2O

Answer

(4) H3CCH2- O \|C-NH2 + Br2 + 4 KOH (alc) H3CCH2NH2 + 2KBr + K2CO3 + 2H2O

Solution

(1) In benzanilide (C6H5NHCOC6H5) the ring attached to –NH– is activated (lone pair of N), while the ring attached to C=O is deactivated. Nitration therefore occurs at the para position of the ring bonded to N, giving p-O2N-C6H4-NHCOC6H5, not the product shown. Incorrect.

(2) The carbylamine reaction does give benzyl isocyanide, but reduction of an isocyanide gives a secondary amine:

C6H5CH2NC + 4[H] C6H5CH2NHCH3 (N-methylbenzylamine), not benzylamine. Incorrect.

(3) As per NCERT, aromatic primary amines cannot be prepared by Gabriel phthalimide synthesis, because aryl halides do not undergo nucleophilic substitution with the phthalimide anion. Incorrect.

(4) Hoffmann bromamide degradation: the amide is converted into a primary amine with one carbon atom less.

CH3CH2CONH2 + Br2 + 4KOH CH3CH2NH2 + K2CO3 + 2KBr + 2H2O

Propanamide gives ethanamine and the equation is balanced (K: 4 = 2 + 2; O: 1 + 4 = 3 + 2; H: 7 + 4 = 7 + 4). Correct.

A student performed analysis of an aliphatic organic compound 'X' which on analysis gave C = 61.01%, H = 15.25%, N = 23.74%. This compound, on treatment with HNO2/H2O, produced another compound 'Y' which did not contain any nitrogen atom. However, the compound 'Y' upon controlled oxidation produced another compound 'Z' that responded to iodoform test. The structure of 'X' is :

  1. CH3-CH2CH(NH2)-CH3
  2. CH3CH2CH2NH2
  3. Ph-CH(CH3)-NH2

A student has been given a compound 'x' of molecular formula C6H7N. 'x' is sparingly soluble in water. However, on addition of dilute mineral acid, 'x' becomes soluble in water. 'x' when treated with CHCl3 and KOH(alc), 'y' is produced. 'y' has a specific unpleasant smell. On treatment with benzenesulphonyl chloride, 'x' gives a compound 'z' which is soluble in alkali. The number of different "H" atoms present in 'z' is :

Ques. 10JEE Main 2026, 22 January (Morning Shift)

'A' is a neutral organic compound (M.F. : C8H9ON). On treatment with aqueous Br2/HO , 'A' forms a compound 'B' which is soluble in dilute acid. 'B' on treatment with aqueous NaNO2/HCl (0-5 C) produces a compound 'C' which on treatment with CuCN/NaCN produces 'D'. Hydrolysis of 'D' produces 'E' which is also obtainable from the hydrolysis of 'A'. 'E' on treatment with acidified KMnO4 produces 'F'. 'F' contains two different types of hydrogen atoms.
