Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
- Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Statement I is true but Statement II is false
- Statement I is false but Statement II is true
Answer
(1) Both Statement I and Statement II are true
Solution
Statement I:
[Al2O3, Cr2O3] are both amphoteric, so they are of the same nature.
[Cl2O7, Mn2O7] are both acidic (Cl and Mn in +7, the highest oxidation state), so they are of the same nature.
[Na2O, V2O3]: Na2O is basic and, as per NCERT, V2O3 (V in +3) is basic, so they are of the same nature.
[CO, N2O] are both neutral, so they are of the same nature.
Thus all 4 pairs contain oxides of the same nature, and Statement I is true.
Statement II:
Na2O is basic, Al2O3 amphoteric, CO neutral and Cl2O7 acidic, so the most basic is Na2O (oxide of the most electropositive element) and the most acidic is Cl2O7; hence Statement II is true.
