Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 24 January (Morning Shift)

Given below are two statements : In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  2. Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Answer

(3) Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Solution

Statement I: Metallic character increases down a group and decreases across a period (from left to right).

K (group 1, period 4) > Mg (group 2, period 3) > Al (group 13, period 3) > B (group 13, period 2, a non-metal).

K > Mg > Al > B is correct. Statement I is true.

Statement II: A cation is smaller than its parent atom, but an anion is larger than its parent atom (added electron(s) increase repulsion and decrease Zeff per electron), e.g. r(Cl-) = 181 pm > r(Cl) = 99 pm.

Atomic radius is not always greater than ionic radius. Statement II is false.
