NEET 2013MCQHard📈 Topic in 62% papers+4−1
Ques. 1NEET 2013

Among bitter gourd, mustard, brinjal, pumpkin, china rose, lupin, cucumber, sunhemp, gram, guava, bean, chilli, plum, petunia, tomato, rose, Withania, potato, onion, aloe and tulip how many plants have hypogynous flower?

  1. Fifteen
  2. Eighteen
  3. Six
  4. Ten

Answer

(1) Fifteen

Solution

As per NCERT, in a hypogynous flower the ovary is superior (e.g. mustard, china rose, brinjal); in a perigynous flower the ovary is half inferior (e.g. plum, rose, peach); in an epigynous flower the ovary is inferior (e.g. guava, cucumber, ray florets of sunflower).

Of the given plants, bitter gourd, pumpkin, cucumber (Cucurbitaceae) and guava are epigynous (4), and plum and rose are perigynous (2).

The rest are hypogynous: mustard, brinjal, china rose, lupin, sunhemp, gram, bean (Fabaceae — ovary superior), chilli, petunia, tomato, Withania, potato (Solanaceae — ovary superior), onion, aloe, tulip (Liliaceae — ovary superior).

∴ Number of hypogynous flowers = 21 − 4 − 2 = 15
