Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 2 April (Evening Shift)

An electron with mass 'm' with an initial velocity (t = 0) v = v0 i (v0 > 0) enters a magnetic field B = B0 j. If the initial de Broglie wavelength at t = 0 is 0 then its value after time 't' would be :

  1. 0 1 - e2 B02 t2m2
  2. 0
  3. 0 1 + e2 B02 t2m2
  4. 0 1 + e2 B02 t2m2

Answer

(2) 0

Solution

The magnetic force on the electron is F = -e( v B).

Since F v at every instant, its power F v = 0, so the magnetic force does no work and the speed stays v0 (the electron only moves on a circle).

Hence the magnitude of momentum p = mv0 stays constant, and

= hp = hmv0 = 0 at all times

Answer: (2)
