Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 23 January (Evening Shift)

Elements X and Y belong to Group 15. The difference between the electronegativity values of 'X' and phosphorus is higher than that of the difference between phosphorus and 'Y'. 'X' & 'Y' are respectively

  1. As & Bi
  2. Bi & N
  3. N & As
  4. As & Sb

Answer

(3) N & As

Solution

Pauling electronegativity values of Group 15 elements (NCERT):

N = 3.0, P = 2.1, As = 2.0, Sb = 1.9, Bi = 1.9

Condition: | X - P| > | P - Y|

(1) X = As, Y = Bi: 0.1 > 0.2 ✗

(2) X = Bi, Y = N: 0.2 > 0.9 ✗

(3) X = N, Y = As: 0.9 > 0.1 ✓

(4) X = As, Y = Sb: 0.1 > 0.2 ✗

X = N and Y = As (nitrogen is far more electronegative than P because of its small size, while As is only slightly less electronegative than P).

Answer: (3)
