Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 4 April (Evening Shift)

Given below are two statements: one is labelled as Assertion (A) and the other is labelled as Reason (R). Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
  2. Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is NOT the correct explanation of (A)
  3. (A) is true but (R) is false
  4. (A) is false but (R) is true

Answer

(3) (A) is true but (R) is false

Solution

In reverse bias a very small current (of the order of μA) flows, almost independent of the applied voltage; at the critical (breakdown) voltage it increases suddenly. (A) is true.

Below the breakdown voltage the reverse current is due to the drift of minority carriers across the junction; majority carriers are stopped by the barrier. (R), which says majority carriers, is false.

Answer: (3)
