Ques. 1AIPMT 2015

Which of the following biomolecules does have a phosphodiester bond?

  1. Amino acids in a polypeptide
  2. Nucleotides in a nucleic acid
  3. Fatty acids in a diglyceride
  4. Monosaccharides in a polysaccharide

Answer

(2) Nucleotides in a nucleic acid

Solution

As per NCERT, in a nucleic acid a phosphate moiety links the 3′-carbon of the sugar of one nucleotide to the 5′-carbon of the sugar of the succeeding nucleotide; the bond between the phosphate and the hydroxyl group of the sugar is an ester bond, and as there is one such ester bond on either side, it is called a phosphodiester bond.

⇒ Amino acids in a polypeptide are linked by peptide bonds, fatty acids in a glyceride by ester bonds and monosaccharides in a polysaccharide by glycosidic bonds.
