The figure shows a hypothetical tetrapeptide portion of a protein with parts labelled A - D. Which one of the following options is correct? [figure]
- D is an acidic amino acid-glutamic acid.
- C is an aromatic amino acid-tryptophan.
- A is the C-terminal amino acid and D is N-terminal amino acid.
- A is a sulphur containing amino acid methionine.
Answer
(1) D is an acidic amino acid-glutamic acid.
Solution
First identify the R groups. A has R = -CH2OH, so it is serine; B has R = -CH2SH, so it is cysteine (sulphur-containing).
C has R = -CH2-C6H4-OH, so it is tyrosine (aromatic), and D has R = -CH2-CH2-COOH, so it is glutamic acid.
As per NCERT, an amino acid with an extra carboxyl group in the R group (glutamic acid) is acidic, hence option (1) is correct.
Options (2), (3) and (4) are wrong because C is tyrosine (not tryptophan), A is serine (not methionine), and the chain is written from the amino end (A) to the carboxyl end (D).
