A phosphoglyceride is always made up of

  1. a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid esterified to glycerol molecule to which a phosphate group is also attached.
  2. a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid esterified to a phosphate group which is also attached to a glycerol molecule.
  3. only a saturated fatty acid esterified to a glycerol molecule to which a phosphate group is also attached.
  4. only an unsaturated fatty acid esterified to a glycerol molecule to which a phosphate group is also attached.

Answer

(1) a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid esterified to glycerol molecule to which a phosphate group is also attached.

Solution

As per NCERT, fatty acids may be saturated (without double bond) or unsaturated (with one or more C=C double bonds), and they are found esterified with glycerol; some lipids have phosphorus and a phosphorylated organic compound in them — phospholipids (e.g. lecithin).

⇒ In a phosphoglyceride, fatty acids (saturated or unsaturated) are esterified to the –OH groups of glycerol, and a phosphate group is attached to the third carbon of the same glycerol.

∵ The fatty acid is linked to glycerol (not to the phosphate), and it need not be only saturated or only unsaturated,

∴ option (1) is correct.
