The Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era is characterized by-

  1. Radiation of reptiles and origin of mammal-like reptiles
  2. Flowering plants and first dinosaurs appear
  3. Gymnosperms are dominant plants and first birds appear
  4. Dinosaurs become extinct and angiosperms appear

Answer

(3) Gymnosperms are dominant plants and first birds appear

Solution

The Mesozoic era has three periods: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous.

The Triassic saw radiation of reptiles, the first dinosaurs and mammal-like reptiles. In the Jurassic, gymnosperms (conifers, cycads) were the dominant plants, dinosaurs were at their peak and the first birds (Archaeopteryx) appeared. In the Cretaceous, flowering plants (angiosperms) appeared and dinosaurs became extinct at its end.

∴ The Jurassic is characterized by dominant gymnosperms and the appearance of the first birds.
