Ques. 1NEET 2017

The element Z = 114 has been discovered recently. It will belong to which of the following family/group and electronic configuration ?

  1. Carbon family, [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p2
  2. Oxygen family, [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p4
  3. Nitrogen family, [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p6
  4. Halogen family, [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p5

Answer

(1) Carbon family, [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p2

Solution

Electrons after radon = 114 - 86 = 28

⇒ 7s2 (2) + 5f14 (14) + 6d10 (10) + 7p2 (2) = 28

∴ Configuration: [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p2

ns2np2 valence shell ⇒ group 14, i.e. carbon family (element 114 is flerovium).

Ques. 2NEET 2016 (Phase 1)

In which of the following options the order of arrangement does not agree with the variation of property indicated against it ?

  1. I < Br < Cl < F (increasing electron gain enthalpy)
  2. Li < Na < K < Rb (increasing metallic radius)
  3. Al3+ < Mg2+ < Na+ < F- (increasing ionic size)
  4. B < C < N < O (increasing first ionisation enthalpy)
Ques. 3AIPMT 2015

The formation of the oxide ion, O2-(g) from oxygen atom requires first an exothermic and then an endothermic step as shown below: O(g) + e- O-(g); H = -141 kJ mol-1 O-(g) + e- O2-(g); H = +780 kJ mol-1 Thus, process of formation of O2- in gas phase is unfavourable even though O2- is isoelectronic with neon. It is due to the fact that,

  1. O- ion has comparatively smaller size than oxygen atom
  2. oxygen is more electronegative
  3. addition of electron in oxygen results in larger size of the ion
  4. electron repulsion outweighs the stability gained by achieving noble gas configuration.
Ques. 4AIPMT 2015 (Cancelled)
