Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2019

For the second period elements the correct increasing order of first ionization enthalpy is :

  1. Li < B < Be < C < N < O < F < Ne
  2. Li < Be < B < C < O < N < F < Ne
  3. Li < B < Be < C < O < N < F < Ne
  4. Li < Be < B < C < N < O < F < Ne

Answer

(3) Li < B < Be < C < O < N < F < Ne

Solution

Across the second period the first ionisation enthalpy increases in general (nuclear charge increases), with two exceptions:

(i) Be (2s2) > B (2s2 2p1): the 2p electron of B is shielded by the 2s electrons and is more easily removed.

(ii) N (2p3) > O (2p4): N has a stable half-filled 2p subshell, while in O the paired electron is removed easily due to electron–electron repulsion.

∴ Li < B < Be < C < O < N < F < Ne

Answer: (3)

Ques. 3NEET 2016 (Phase 1)

In which of the following options the order of arrangement does not agree with the variation of property indicated against it ?

  1. I < Br < Cl < F (increasing electron gain enthalpy)
  2. Li < Na < K < Rb (increasing metallic radius)
  3. Al3+ < Mg2+ < Na+ < F- (increasing ionic size)
  4. B < C < N < O (increasing first ionisation enthalpy)
Ques. 4AIPMT 2015

The formation of the oxide ion, O2-(g) from oxygen atom requires first an exothermic and then an endothermic step as shown below: O(g) + e- O-(g); H = -141 kJ mol-1 O-(g) + e- O2-(g); H = +780 kJ mol-1 Thus, process of formation of O2- in gas phase is unfavourable even though O2- is isoelectronic with neon. It is due to the fact that,

  1. O- ion has comparatively smaller size than oxygen atom
  2. oxygen is more electronegative
  3. addition of electron in oxygen results in larger size of the ion
  4. electron repulsion outweighs the stability gained by achieving noble gas configuration.
