Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2020

The transverse section of a plant shows following anatomical features : (i) Large number of scattered vascular bundles surrounded by bundle sheath (ii) Large conspicuous parenchymatous ground tissue (iii) Vascular bundles conjoint and closed (iv) Phloem parenchyma absent Identify the category of plant and its part:

  1. Monocotyledonous root
  2. Dicotyledonous stem
  3. Dicotyledonous root
  4. Monocotyledonous stem

Answer

(4) Monocotyledonous stem

Solution

As per NCERT, the monocot stem has a sclerenchymatous hypodermis, a large number of scattered vascular bundles, each surrounded by a sclerenchymatous bundle sheath, and a large, conspicuous parenchymatous ground tissue.

Its vascular bundles are conjoint and closed (no cambium), and the peripheral bundles are smaller than the centrally placed ones. Phloem parenchyma is absent and water-containing cavities are present within the vascular bundles.

Roots, on the other hand, have radial vascular bundles, and a dicot stem has a ring of open bundles.

The section is of a monocotyledonous stem.
