Ques. 1NEET 2013 (Karnataka)

In an experiment it showed that 10 mL of 0.05 M solution of chloride required 10 mL of 0.1 M solution of AgNO3, which of the following will be the formula of the chloride (X stands for the symbol of the element other than chlorine)

  1. X2Cl2
  2. XCl2
  3. XCl4
  4. X2Cl

Answer

(2) XCl2

Solution

Millimoles of chloride salt = 10 0.05 = 0.5

Millimoles of AgNO3 = 10 0.1 = 1.0

∵ Ag+ + Cl- AgCl, millimoles of Cl- = 1.0

⇒ Cl- per formula unit = 1.00.5 = 2

∴ The formula of the chloride is XCl2.

Answer: (2)
