Ques. 1AIPMT 2015

Destruction of the anterior horn cells of the spinal cord would result in loss of

  1. commissural impulses
  2. integrating impulses
  3. sensory impulses
  4. voluntary motor impulses.

Answer

(4) voluntary motor impulses.

Solution

In the grey matter of the spinal cord, the dorsal (posterior) horns receive sensory (afferent) fibres, while the ventral (anterior) horns contain the cell bodies of motor neurons.

∵ The axons of the anterior horn cells form the motor (efferent) fibres that carry impulses to the skeletal muscles.

∴ Destruction of the anterior horn cells results in loss of voluntary motor impulses (paralysis of the muscles supplied).
