Ques. 1NEET 2017

Which of the following statements is not correct?

  1. Ovalbumin is a simple food reserve in egg-white.
  2. Blood proteins thrombin and fibrinogen are involved in blood clotting.
  3. Denaturation makes the proteins more active.
  4. Insulin maintains sugar level in the blood of a human body.

Answer

(3) Denaturation makes the proteins more active.

Solution

As per NCERT, when a protein in its native form is subjected to a physical change (change in temperature) or a chemical change (change in pH), its hydrogen bonds are disturbed; globules unfold and helices get uncoiled, and the protein loses its biological activity. This is called denaturation.

∴ Denaturation makes proteins less active (inactive), not more active.

Ovalbumin is the food-reserve protein of egg-white, thrombin and fibrinogen take part in blood clotting, and insulin maintains the blood sugar level — these are correct.
