Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 7 April (Morning Shift)

Given below are two statements: In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

  1. Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are true

Answer

(3) Statement I is true but Statement II is false

Solution

Statement I: ozonolysis cleaves the C=C bond and each double-bonded carbon becomes a C=O group. In cis-2-butene both halves are identical:

CH3-CH=CH-CH3 (cis-2-butene) [(ii) Zn, H2O](i) O3 2 CH3-CHO

so only ethanal is formed and Statement I is true.

Statement II: 3,6-Dimethyloct-4-ene, CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH=CH-CH(CH3)-CH2-CH3, gives

[(ii) Zn, H2O](i) O3 2 CH3-CH2- *CH(CH3)-CHO (2-methylbutanal)

C-2 of 2-methylbutanal carries four different groups (H, CH3, C2H5 and CHO), so the product has a chiral carbon atom and Statement II is false.

Answer: (3)
