Answer

(1) [figure]

Solution

3-Methyl-6-oxoheptanal: 1CHO- 2CH2- 3CH(CH3)- 4CH2- 5CH2- 6CO- 7CH3

Both C=O groups are in one molecule the alkene was cyclic. Remove the two O atoms and join C-1 and C-6 by a double bond:

a six-membered ring with -CH3 on the doubly bonded carbon (old C-6) and -CH3 on old C-3, i.e. 1,4-dimethylcyclohex-1-ene.

[figure]

In option (1) the second -CH3 is on the ring carbon para to the doubly bonded C bearing -CH3 (1,4-relation).

Options (2), (3) and (4) give 5-methyl-6-oxoheptanal, 2-methyl-6-oxoheptanal and 4-methyl-6-oxoheptanal respectively.

Answer: (1)
