Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2022

Given below are two statements In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Answer

(2) Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect

Solution

As per NCERT, the boiling points of group 16 hydrides are H2O 373 K, H2S 213 K, H2Se 232 K and H2Te 269 K, so the order is H2S < H2Se < H2Te < H2O.

H2O has the highest boiling point because of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, so Statement I is incorrect.

From H2S to H2Te the boiling point rises with molar mass, but H2O (lowest molar mass) has the highest boiling point; hence the boiling points of these hydrides do not increase with molar mass and Statement II is incorrect.

∴ Both statements are incorrect.
