Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2021

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

  1. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is true.
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are true.
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are false.
  4. Statement I is correct but Statement II is false.

Answer

(2) Both Statement I and Statement II are true.

Solution

Down group 17 the size of the halogen atom increases (F < Cl < Br < I), so the H–X bond length increases and the bond dissociation enthalpy decreases: H–F > H–Cl > H–Br > H–I.

The weaker the H–X bond, the more easily H+ is released.

∴ As per NCERT, acid strength: HF < HCl < HBr < HI — Statement I is true, and Statement II gives the correct reason.
