Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2022

Choose the correct statement:

  1. Diamond and graphite have two dimensional network.
  2. Diamond is covalent and graphite is ionic.
  3. Diamond is sp3 hybridized and graphite is sp2 hybridized.
  4. Both diamond and graphite are used as dry lubricants.

Answer

(3) Diamond is sp3 hybridized and graphite is sp2 hybridized.

Solution

As per NCERT, in diamond each carbon atom is sp3 hybridised and linked tetrahedrally to four other carbon atoms, giving a rigid three-dimensional network, while in graphite each carbon atom is sp2 hybridised and bonded to three others in hexagonal layers.

So (1) is wrong because only graphite has a two-dimensional (layered) structure, and (2) is wrong because both are covalent solids.

(4) is also wrong: graphite (slippery layers) is a dry lubricant, whereas diamond is used as an abrasive.
