Ques. 1NEET (UG) 2019

Which of the following is incorrect statement?

  1. GeX4 (X = F, Cl, Br, I) is more stable than GeX2
  2. SnF4 is ionic in nature
  3. PbF4 is covalent in nature
  4. SiCl4 is easily hydrolysed

Answer

(3) PbF4 is covalent in nature

Solution

(1) For Ge the +4 oxidation state is more stable than +2 ⇒ GeX4 is more stable than GeX2 ⇒ correct.

(2) and (3) As per NCERT, most of the tetrahalides are covalent in nature, but SnF4 and PbF4 are ionic in nature ⇒ (2) is correct and (3) is incorrect.

(4) SiCl4 is easily hydrolysed because Si can accept a lone pair of water into its vacant d-orbital ⇒ correct.
