Ques. 1AIPMT 2007

Passage cells are thin-walled cells found in:-

  1. Endodermis of roots facilitating rapid transport of water from cortex to pericycle
  2. Testa of seeds to enable emergence of growing embryonic axis during seed germination.
  3. Phloem elements that serve as entry points for substances for transport to other plant parts
  4. Central region of style through which the pollen tube grows towards the ovary.

Answer

(1) Endodermis of roots facilitating rapid transport of water from cortex to pericycle

Solution

As per NCERT, the innermost layer of the cortex of the root is the endodermis, made of a single layer of barrel-shaped cells with no intercellular spaces; their tangential and radial walls have a deposition of water-impermeable, waxy suberin as Casparian strips.

⇒ In older roots, some endodermal cells opposite the protoxylem remain thin-walled and without such thickening; these are passage cells.

∵ Water and minerals can pass through these cells directly from the cortex to the pericycle and then to the xylem.

∴ Passage cells are found in the endodermis of roots, facilitating rapid transport of water from cortex to pericycle.
