Ques. 1AIPMT 2002

Vessels are found in:

  1. Most of the angiosperms and a few gymnosperms
  2. All angiosperms and some gymnosperms
  3. All pteridophyta
  4. All angiosperms, all gymnosperms and some pteridophyta

Answer

(1) Most of the angiosperms and a few gymnosperms

Solution

As per NCERT, vessels are a characteristic feature of angiosperms, and gymnosperms lack vessels in their xylem.

Vessels are present in most angiosperms (a few primitive angiosperms are vesselless), and among gymnosperms only a few (the Gnetales, e.g. Gnetum, Ephedra) possess them.

∴ Pteridophytes in general and most gymnosperms have only tracheids, so options (3) and (4) are wrong, and option (2) is wrong because not all angiosperms have vessels.
