Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 21 January (Morning Shift)

An aluminium and a steel rod having same lengths and cross-sections are joined to make total length of 120 cm at 30 . The coefficients of linear expansion of aluminium and steel are 24 10-6/ and 1.2 10-5/ , respectively. The length of this composite rod when its temperature is raised to 100 , is cm.

  1. 120.20
  2. 120.06
  3. 120.15
  4. 120.03

Answer

(3) 120.15

Solution

Each rod: L0 = 60 cm; T = 100 - 30 = 70

L = L0( Al + steel) T

= 60 (24 10-6 + 12 10-6) 70

= 60 36 10-6 70 = 0.1512 cm

L = 120 + 0.1512 120.15 cm

Answer: (3)
