Ques. 1AIPMT 2002

A gene is said to be dominant if : -

  1. It is expressed only in heterozygous condition
  2. It expresses its effect only in homozygous stage
  3. It is never expressed in any condition
  4. It is expressed both in homozygous and heterozygous condition

Answer

(4) It is expressed both in homozygous and heterozygous condition

Solution

As per NCERT, a dominant factor (allele) expresses itself in the phenotype whether it is present with a similar allele (homozygous, TT) or with a dissimilar allele (heterozygous, Tt).

∵ In Tt, the dominant allele T masks the recessive allele t, and the phenotype is the same as that of TT.

∴ A dominant gene is expressed both in homozygous and heterozygous condition.
