Ques. 1JEE Main 2025, 28 January (Evening Shift)

A balloon and its content having mass M is moving up with an acceleration ‘a’. The mass that must be released from the content so that the balloon starts moving up with an acceleration ‘3a’ will be (Take ‘g’ as acceleration due to gravity)

  1. 3Ma2a + g
  2. 2Ma3a + g
  3. 3Ma2a - g
  4. 2Ma3a - g

Answer

(2) 2Ma3a + g

Solution

Let F be the upthrust, which does not change when mass m is released.

Initially F - Mg = Ma, so F = M(g + a).

After releasing m, F - (M - m)g = (M - m)(3a), hence

M(g + a) = (M - m)(g + 3a)

M - m = M(g + a)g + 3a

m = M - M(g + a)g + 3a = 2Ma3a + g

Answer: (2)
