As per NCERT, some strains of Bacillus thuringiensis produce proteins (Bt toxin, coded by cry genes) that kill certain insects such as lepidopterans, coleopterans and dipterans.
The cry gene has been isolated from the bacterium and incorporated into crop plants such as cotton (Bt cotton), so these transgenic plants make their own insecticidal protein and are resistant to insect pests.
∴ Bt strains are used for designing novel bioinsecticidal plants.
