During DNA replication, Okazaki fragments are used to elongate
- The leading strand away from replication fork
- The lagging strand towards replication fork
- The lagging strand away from the replication fork
- The leading strand towards replication fork
Answer
(3) The lagging strand away from the replication fork
Solution
DNA polymerase can polymerise only in the 5' 3' direction.
Hence on the template with 3' 5' polarity replication is continuous (leading strand), whereas on the template with 5' 3' polarity it is discontinuous; the short pieces (Okazaki fragments) are synthesised in the direction away from the replication fork and later joined by DNA ligase.
∴ Okazaki fragments elongate the lagging strand away from the replication fork.
