Photosynthesis in Higher Plants

Ques. 1AIPMT 2008

The C4 plants are photosynthetically more efficient than C3 plants because

  1. the CO2 efflux is not prevented
  2. they have more chloroplasts
  3. the CO2 compensation point is more
  4. CO2 generated during photorespiration is trapped and recycled through PEP carboxylase

Answer

(2) they have more chloroplasts

Solution

As per NCERT, C4 plants show Kranz anatomy: the bundle sheath cells around the vascular bundles are large, have a large number of chloroplasts, thick walls impervious to gaseous exchange and no intercellular spaces.

Besides the mesophyll chloroplasts, the chloroplast-rich bundle sheath carries out the Calvin cycle, so a C4 leaf has more chloroplasts taking part in carbon fixation.

The CO2 released from C4 acids in the bundle sheath raises the intracellular CO2 concentration, so RuBisCO works as a carboxylase and photorespiration is minimised.

That is why C4 plants are photosynthetically more efficient (higher productivity and yield).
