Ques. 1JEE Main 2024, 27 January (Evening Shift)

Which among the following halide/s will not show SN1 reaction: Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

  1. (B) and (C) only
  2. (A), (B) and (D) only
  3. (B) only
  4. (A) and (B) only

Answer

(3) (B) only

Solution

SN1 needs a stable carbocation after loss of Cl-:

(A): allyl cation CH2=CH- CH2 CH2-CH=CH2 (resonance) ⇒ (A) shows SN1

(B): vinyl cation CH3-CH= CH is very unstable, and C–Cl has partial double-bond character ⇒ (B) does not show SN1

(C): benzyl cation C6H5 CH2 is resonance-stabilised ⇒ (C) shows SN1

(D): 2° cation (CH3)2 CH (hyperconjugation) ⇒ (D) shows SN1

∴ (B) only

Answer: (3)
