Which statements are True? Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A, C and E only
  2. B, C and D only
  3. C and E only
  4. C, D and E only

Answer

(3) C and E only

Solution

Hoffmann bromamide degradation (given only by primary amides RCONH2, R = alkyl or aryl):

RCONH2 + Br2 + 4NaOH RNH2 + Na2CO3 + 2NaBr + 2H2O

A. 4 mol NaOH but only 1 mol Br2 per mole of amide ⇒ false.

B. Alkyl amides react too (e.g. CH3CONH2 CH3NH2) ⇒ false.

C. The product is a primary amine with one carbon atom less ⇒ true.

D. A secondary amide (RCONHR′) cannot form the isocyanate intermediate ⇒ no secondary amine ⇒ false.

E. By-products are Na2CO3, NaBr and H2O ⇒ true.

∴ C and E only.
