Ques. 1AIPMT 2002

Which of the following is without exception in angiosperms?

  1. Presence of vessels
  2. Double fertilisation
  3. Secondary growth
  4. Autotrophic nutrition

Answer

(2) Double fertilisation

Solution

As per NCERT, double fertilisation (syngamy + triple fusion) is an event unique to flowering plants and occurs in all angiosperms.

The other features have exceptions: vessels are absent in some angiosperms (e.g. Wintera, Trochodendron), secondary growth is generally absent in monocots, and some angiosperms are not autotrophic, e.g. Cuscuta (parasite) and Monotropa (saprophyte).

∴ Double fertilisation is the feature present without exception in angiosperms.
