Ques. 1AIPMT 2008

The wave described by y = 0.25 sin(10 x - 2 t), where x and y are in metres and t in seconds, is a wave travelling along the

  1. +ve x direction with frequency 1 Hz and wavelength = 0.2 m.
  2. -ve x direction with amplitude 0.25 m and wavelength = 0.2 m.
  3. -ve x direction with frequency 1 Hz.
  4. +ve x direction with frequency Hz and wavelength = 0.2 m.

Answer

(1) +ve x direction with frequency 1 Hz and wavelength = 0.2 m.

Solution

Compare with the standard form y = A sin(kx - t).

The signs of the x and t terms are opposite, the wave travels along the +ve x direction.

k = 10 m-1 = 2 k = 2 10 = 0.2 m

= 2 rad s-1 = 2 = 1 Hz

The wave travels along the +ve x direction with frequency 1 Hz and wavelength 0.2 m.
