Ques. 1AIPMT 2006

The time of reverberation of a room A is one second. What will be the time (in seconds) of reverberation of a room, having all the dimensions double of those of room A?

  1. 1
  2. 2
  3. 4
  4. 1/2

Answer

(2) 2

Solution

Reverberation (persistence of sound due to repeated reflections) time, by Sabine's formula:

T = 0.161 VaS (V = volume, S = surface area, a = absorption coefficient)

When every dimension is doubled: V 8V, S 4S

T' = 84T = 2T

T' = 2 1 = 2 s

Answer: (2)
