Ques. 1JEE Main 2026, 22 January (Evening Shift)

When 1 g of compound (X) is subjected to Kjeldahl's method for estimation of nitrogen, 15 mL 1 M H2SO4 was neutralized by ammonia evolved. The percentage of nitrogen in compound (X) is :

  1. 0.21
  2. 21
  3. 42
  4. 0.42

Answer

(3) 42

Solution

2NH3 + H2SO4 (NH4)2SO4

Moles of H2SO4 = 15 11000 = 0.015 mol, so moles of NH3 = 2 0.015 = 0.030 mol.

Hence mass of N = 0.030 14 = 0.42 g

% of N = 0.421 100 = 42

(As per NCERT: % of N = 1.4 M 2Vm = 1.4 1 2 151 = 42)

Answer: (3)
