Heartwood differs from sapwood in –

  1. Having dead and non-conducting elements
  2. Being susceptible to pests and pathogens
  3. Presence of rays and fibres
  4. Absence of vessels and parenchyma

Answer

(1) Having dead and non-conducting elements

Solution

As per NCERT, in old trees the central (inner) secondary xylem becomes dark brown due to deposition of tannins, resins, oils, gums, aromatic substances and essential oils; this is heartwood.

Heartwood consists of dead elements with highly lignified walls and does not conduct water; it gives mechanical support.

Sapwood (the peripheral, lighter region) is involved in conduction of water and minerals.

Heartwood is resistant (not susceptible) to microorganisms and insects, and both regions contain rays, fibres and vessels.

∴ Heartwood differs in having dead and non-conducting elements.
