Ques. 1AIPMT 2006

A solution containing 10 g per dm3 of urea (molecular mass = 60 g mol-1) is isotonic with a 5% solution of a nonvolatile solute. The molecular mass of this nonvolatile solute is

  1. 200 g mol-1
  2. 250 g mol-1
  3. 300 g mol-1
  4. 350 g mol-1

Answer

(3) 300 g mol-1

Solution

∵ Isotonic solutions have the same osmotic pressure, = CRT ⇒ C1 = C2

Urea: C1 = 1060 1 mol L-1 = 16 mol L-1

5% (w/v) solution: 5 g in 100 mL = 50 g in 1 L ⇒ C2 = 50M mol L-1

⇒ 50M = 16

∴ M = 300 g mol-1
