Ques. 1AIPMT 2000

From the colligative properties of solution, which one is the best method for the determination of molecular weight of proteins and polymers?

  1. Osmotic pressure
  2. Lowering in vapour pressure
  3. Lowering in freezing point
  4. Elevation in boiling point

Answer

(1) Osmotic pressure

Solution

∵ As per NCERT, the osmotic pressure method has the advantage over other methods that pressure measurement is around room temperature and the molarity of the solution is used instead of molality.

Its magnitude is large even for very dilute solutions, so it can be measured accurately for macromolecules of high molar mass.

Biomolecules such as proteins are generally not stable at higher temperatures, and polymers have poor solubility.

∴ Osmotic pressure is the best method for determining the molar mass of proteins and polymers.
