Ques. 1AIPMT 2005

In ornithine cycle, which of the following wastes are removed from the blood?

  1. CO2 and urea
  2. Ammonia and urea
  3. CO2 and ammonia
  4. Urea and urine

Answer

(3) CO2 and ammonia

Solution

As per NCERT, ammonia produced by metabolism is converted into urea in the liver of ureotelic animals.

This conversion occurs through the ornithine (urea) cycle:

2NH3 + CO2 NH2CONH2 + H2O

⇒ Toxic ammonia and CO2 are taken up from the blood and used to make urea, which is then released into the blood.

∴ CO2 and ammonia are removed from the blood.
